We phoned BJ's on 2301 Taylor Road Cheapeake, VA prior to our visit to request information for a possible purchase. We provided the item number 608083 and requested any additional information that would apply - specifically about getting a one day pass.

We arrived at the store and were told they were not offering a one day pass at this time and were pressured to purchase a membership. Only when we refused to purchase a membership and complained that we should have been told that when we called in the am and specifically requested all relevant information regarding the purchase of our item (due to our long commute to reach BJs) were we given a different option. We found the item and proceeded to the check out. Upon reaching the check out there was an additional $15 charge for our item.

We asked the cashier what the charge was for and was told it was a STATE fee for purchasing a battery with out bringing in one to recycle. We then went to the customer service desk to inquire about having the fee waived due to the long distance we had to travel to get to the store and that we fully intend to recycle the old battery and would gladly provide proof of it’s recycling. We were told the fee was definitely a state fee and could not be waived. We were not happy with this because we were not told about the fee when we called earlier in the day, before our long trip and there was no sign in the display area declaring the fee.

Imagine our surprise and disgust to find out after we returned home (and did some research) that the fee is NOT A STATE FEE, but a fee BJ’s charges and keeps.

BJ’s DID NOT inform us of the charge when we phoned them, they DO NOT have a sign posted disclosing the fee and they lied about the fee being a charge passed on to the Commonwealth of Virginia. We feel the fee (and sales tax on the fee) should be refunded to use under the circumstances.
